Funny Safari Stories from Guides

1. The Curious Baboon Incident

One of our veteran guides, Moses, recalls a day when a troop of baboons decided to “inspect” the safari jeep. While the guests were out admiring a herd of elephants, a particularly bold baboon jumped into the vehicle, found an open bag of snacks, and made himself at home. By the time everyone returned, he was lounging in the backseat like a VIP on holiday. It took a bit of clapping and coaxing to convince him to give up his throne.

2. The Guest Who Roared

During a night drive, a guest decided to mimic a lion’s roar — quite convincingly, actually. Unfortunately, a real lion in the bushes wasn’t impressed. It responded with a deep growl that shook the Land Cruiser. The guest turned pale, apologized to the king of the jungle, and has never attempted animal impressions since.

3. The Surprise Under the Seat

Guide Sarah tells of a guest who kept squirming in their seat, thinking a pebble had gotten into the jeep. Turns out, it wasn’t a pebble but a small tree frog hitching a ride. Once discovered, the frog became the unofficial mascot of the tour. The group even named him “Kermit” and made sure he was safely dropped off near a pond.

4. When GPS Met Giraffe

One guide shared a story of a self-driving tourist who insisted on using Google Maps to explore the savannah. The directions led him straight into a giraffe crossing. When he stopped, confused, a giraffe walked over and stared into the windshield, almost as if to say, “You’re lost, aren’t you?” The guide had to rescue him — both from the path and his own overconfidence.

5. Monkey Business with Sunglasses

On a lunch stop near a forest edge, a guest removed their sunglasses and placed them on a table. A monkey, clearly a fashion enthusiast, swooped in and grabbed them. For the rest of the afternoon, it could be seen perched on a tree, striking poses like a celebrity. The sunglasses were never returned, but the photos of the monkey model are legendary among the guides.

6. The Zebra Confusion

One new guide recounted his first solo drive where a guest asked, “Why are the white horses painted with black stripes?” The guide paused, thinking it was a joke. It wasn’t. After a gentle explanation of what a zebra is, the guest nodded and said, “Oh, I thought they were just extra fancy horses!”
