Overview
The Nkuringo Gorilla Group is one of the most fascinating families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Located in the southern sector of the park, this group offers an adventurous trekking experience through steep terrain and dense forests.
Getting There
- By Road: From Kampala or Entebbe, it’s an 8–10 hour drive via Kabale and Kisoro. From Kigali, Rwanda, it’s a shorter 4–5 hour drive. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for the journey.
- By Air: Domestic flights from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip are available, followed by a short drive to Nkuringo.
Trekking Experience
- Treks begin with a morning briefing at the Nkuringo trailhead, where guides provide safety instructions and park rules.
- The trek can last 2–8 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. The terrain is steep and challenging but offers rewarding views and encounters.
- You’ll spend up to one hour observing the gorillas, maintaining a respectful distance of at least 7 meters.
Permits
- A gorilla trekking permit is required and costs $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
- Permits should be booked well in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a registered tour operator.
Accommodation
- Stay in Nkuringo village or nearby lodges to ensure you’re close to the trailhead. Options range from budget-friendly campsites to luxury lodges.

Best Time to Visit
The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are ideal for trekking, as trails are less muddy and visibility is better.
