Ostrich Safaris: Where to Spot Them
Ostriches are the largest birds on Earth and are a unique sight on any safari. While not a “safari” dedicated solely to them, they are commonly found in specific open grassland habitats in Tanzania.
Best Parks for Ostrich Sightings:
- Serengeti National Park:
- Why it’s great: The vast open plains of the Serengeti, particularly the central and southern areas, are ideal habitats for ostriches. They are relatively common and often seen in pairs or small groups.
- Tactics: Look for them foraging in the grasslands. Their height makes them easy to spot.
- Tarangire National Park:
- Why it’s great: Tarangire’s open woodlands and grassy plains also provide good opportunities to see ostriches.
- Tactics: They are often seen around the park’s main tracks.
- Ngorongoro Crater:
- Why it’s great: The open grasslands of the crater floor provide excellent habitat, and ostriches are a regular sighting here.
- Tactics: Due to the relatively confined space, they are quite easy to spot.
- Arusha National Park (Momella Lakes area):
- Why it’s great: While not as famous for large mammals, Arusha National Park’s Momella Lakes area is a good spot for ostriches.
- Tactics: Look for them around the open areas near the lakes.
Ostrich Fun Facts:
- Flightless: They are known for their powerful legs and speed (up to 70 km/h or 43 mph), not flight.
- Diet: Primarily herbivores, eating plants, seeds, and fruits, but will also consume insects.
- Large Eggs: They lay the largest eggs of any living bird.
