Visa & Vaccination Requirements for Uganda

Visa Requirements

Travelers visiting Uganda are required to obtain a visa prior to entry, except for citizens of visa-exempt countries. The visa process is straightforward and can be completed online.

Types of Visas Available:

  • Tourist Visa: Valid for 30–90 days. Ideal for travelers visiting for leisure, safaris, or family visits.
  • East Africa Tourist Visa: Allows multiple entries to Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda. Valid for 90 days.
  • Transit Visa: For travelers passing through Uganda en route to another destination. Valid for a maximum of 7 days.
  • Multiple Entry Visa: Suitable for frequent travelers. Can be valid for 6 months, 12 months, or 24 months.

Visa Application Process:

  1. Apply through the Uganda Electronic Visa/Permit Application System.
  2. Upload required documents such as passport bio-data page, passport-size photo, and yellow fever certificate.
  3. Pay the visa fee online.
  4. Wait for approval and print your e-visa to present at the point of entry.

Passport Requirements:

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Uganda.
  • It must have at least one blank page for the entry stamp.

Vaccination Requirements

Before entering Uganda, travelers must meet certain health and vaccination requirements to ensure the safety of both visitors and residents.

Mandatory Vaccinations:

  • Yellow Fever Vaccination: Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for all travelers aged 1 year and above. A valid Yellow Fever Certificate must be presented on arrival.

Recommended Vaccinations:

  • Hepatitis A: Recommended for most travelers, especially those who may eat local food or drink untreated water.
  • Hepatitis B: Especially important for long-term travelers or those who might have close contact with local people.
  • Typhoid: Advised if you plan to eat or drink outside of major hotels and restaurants.
  • Rabies: Recommended for travelers involved in outdoor and other activities that might bring them into direct contact with animals.
  • Cholera: May be advised in specific cases, especially during outbreaks or in rural areas.
  • Meningitis (Meningococcal): Especially if you are visiting during the dry season or staying in crowded conditions.

Malaria Prevention:

  • Uganda is a malaria-endemic country. Travelers are advised to take antimalarial medication before, during, and after their trip.
  • Use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved clothing, and sleep under mosquito nets where possible.

Final Advice

Before traveling, consult with a travel health clinic or your physician at least 4–6 weeks prior to departure. This will give you enough time to receive all necessary vaccinations and medications. Staying informed and prepared ensures a healthy and enjoyable trip to Uganda.
