Budongo Forest is one of East Africa's largest remaining stands of mahogany forest, and home to several habituated chimpanzee communities. Treks depart early morning with a ranger guide, following fresh signs — feeding sounds, nests, calls — to locate a group. Sighting rates are high, though as with any wild primate trek, time with the chimps (typically around one hour once found) and total trek duration can vary.
Because Budongo sits just outside the park boundary, it's almost always added as a half-day extension to a Murchison Falls itinerary rather than a standalone destination — most visitors do it on the way in or out of the park, or as a dedicated day within a 4+ day trip.
Beyond chimpanzees, Budongo hosts red-tailed and black-and-white colobus monkeys, and is a strong birding location in its own right, with several forest specialists not found in the park's savanna.
