The Nile Boat Cruise at Murchison Falls

Quick facts: Duration 2–3 hrs · Departs from Paraa · Runs year-round · Booked through your lodge or operator, park boat-cruise fee applies VERIFY current fee

What to expect

The boat cruise is, for most visitors, the single best experience in the park. Launches depart from Paraa and travel upstream along the Victoria Nile toward the base of the falls, moving slowly enough to take in wildlife along both banks. As you near the base, the water narrows and the sound of the falls builds well before you can see them — the cruise ends directly beneath the gorge, close enough to feel the spray.

What you'll see

This stretch of the Nile holds one of the densest hippo populations in Africa, with pods visible almost continuously along the route, plus large Nile crocodiles basking on the sandbanks. Birdlife is exceptional — African fish eagles, herons, kingfishers, and, in the papyrus reed beds near the delta, the chance of a shoebill stork sighting, one of Uganda's most sought-after birds.
