Mountain gorillas and Murchison Falls' Big Four wildlife are Uganda's two headline draws, and combining them into one trip is by far the most common way travellers structure a longer Uganda safari. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in the far southwest, holds roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorilla population across several habituated family groups.
A permit buys one hour with a habituated gorilla family, but the trek itself can run anywhere from under an hour to several hours of hiking through dense, steep rainforest to reach them — genuinely unpredictable, and worth being realistically fit for. A Gorilla Habituation Experience ($1,500+/person) is also available at select sites, offering four hours with a semi-habituated family alongside researchers, for travellers wanting more time and a deeper experience.
Because Bwindi sits in the opposite corner of the country from Murchison Falls, this combination needs either a full multi-day road journey (often routed via Kibale, allowing a second primate stop en route) or a domestic charter flight to compress the travel time. As of March 2026, individual travellers can no longer book gorilla permits directly through UWA — bookings must go through a licensed operator. Book well ahead: 3–6 months for peak season (June–September, December), 6–12 months for the December/New Year period.
