Murchison River Lodge

Quick facts: Location: south bank of the Nile, roughly 20km downstream of the falls, outside the park boundary · Rooms: 4 thatched cottages, 3 safari tents, 5 river camping tents, plus a campsite

Overview

Murchison River Lodge is a family-run, fully off-grid property set across 28–30 acres of natural bush on the south bank, with hippo pods and papyrus islands visible directly from the restaurant deck. It genuinely spans budget-to-mid-range within one property — camping tents at the low end, thatched two-storey cottages (with a mezzanine double bed, suited to families of up to four) at the higher end.

Location and access

Around 5.5 hours from Kampala via Masindi, or roughly an hour's flight to Pakuba or Bugungu airstrip followed by a 45-minute road transfer. Being just outside the park boundary keeps costs down without adding significant distance to activities.

What's on site

A swimming pool, restaurant serving homemade meals with locally sourced ingredients (including fresh fish), a play area for children, and genuinely close wildlife encounters — elephant herds are regularly seen from the lodge grounds.

Best for

Families and budget-conscious travellers wanting real flexibility within one property — from camping up to a private cottage — plus a strong claim to sustainability and local sourcing.
