Most travellers do — the main exception is East African Community citizens (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan), who don't require a visa. Nearly everyone else must apply for an e-Visa online before travel; Uganda no longer offers visa on arrival, so this cannot be left until you land.
Uganda Tourist e-Visa — single-entry, Uganda only. VERIFY current fee, indicatively ~$50 East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) — multiple entry across Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda, valid for 90 days. VERIFY current fee, indicatively ~$100 — worth choosing if your trip combines Uganda with Kenya or Rwanda (note: this does not cover Tanzania, which requires a separate visa).
Applications are submitted through Uganda's official immigration e-Visa portal only — the government has warned about fraudulent third-party sites charging inflated fees, so use the official channel or a trusted operator who applies on your behalf.
Every traveller over one year old must show a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate, administered at least 10 days before arrival. This is checked both during e-Visa application and at immigration on arrival, and is consistently the most common reason applications are delayed or entry is refused — don't leave this until the last minute.
Processing typically takes 2–5 business days, but apply at least 2–3 weeks before travel to allow margin for any document issues. Your approval letter is valid for 90 days from issue — if your trip is delayed beyond that window, you'll need to reapply.
Print your e-Visa approval letter and carry it with you — this is required for biometric processing at the border, alongside your printed yellow fever certificate.
