What to expect

A balloon safari lifts off before sunrise and drifts over the north bank savanna as the park wakes up — elephant herds and giraffe visible from above, the Nile catching the early light in the distance. It's a quieter, slower way to see the landscape than a game drive, and one of the few activities in the park with genuinely limited availability, since it depends on weather and wind conditions.

Flights typically end with a champagne breakfast set up in the bush, a nice touch for honeymoon or special-occasion itineraries.

Tips

• Book well ahead — availability is limited and it's often the first activity to sell out in peak season
• Dress in layers; it's cold at altitude before sunrise even in the dry season
