The north bank of the Nile holds Murchison Falls' richest game-viewing terrain — open savanna and acacia woodland where lions, elephants, buffalo, and the world's largest population of Rothschild's giraffe move across wide, flat grassland. Game drives here are done in a 4×4 safari vehicle with a guide, typically departing before 6:30am when predators are most active, or in the late afternoon as the heat drops and animals move back toward water.
A standard drive covers 3–4 hours; a full-day option (with a picnic lunch inside the park) covers more ground and gives you a second window at dusk. Because the park's ferry crossing links the south bank lodges to the north bank game areas, most itineraries factor in ferry timing as part of the morning schedule.
Elephant herds and lone bulls are seen on nearly every drive. Buffalo, Uganda kob, and Rothschild's giraffe are common. Lion sightings are frequent but not guaranteed on any single drive — guides track fresh signs and radio other vehicles when a pride is spotted. Leopards are present but elusive; spotting one usually comes down to a guide noticing hanging legs from a tree branch rather than the animal itself moving in the open.
