What to expect

With over 450 recorded species, Murchison Falls is one of Uganda's premier birding destinations, and the habitat variety — river, papyrus swamp, savanna, and forest — means a single trip can produce an unusually long list. The single most sought-after species is the shoebill stork, a huge, prehistoric-looking bird found in the papyrus marshes near the Nile delta; sightings aren't guaranteed but the delta area on a dedicated boat trip gives the best odds.

Along the river, expect African fish eagles, herons, kingfishers, and skimmers. On savanna game drives, look for the grey crowned crane — Uganda's national bird — plus bee-eaters and rollers. Budongo Forest adds a further set of forest specialists not found elsewhere in the park.

Tips

• A dedicated birding guide sees considerably more than a general safari guide — worth requesting specifically if birding is a priority
• Bring a spotting scope for the delta if you're serious about the shoebill
• Early morning and late afternoon produce the most activity
