What to expect

The stretch of the Victoria Nile below the falls holds some of Uganda's best sport fishing — Nile perch, some well over 50kg, and hard-fighting tiger fish, in fast water charged by the falls themselves. Trips are usually arranged through your lodge, with equipment, a licensed guide, and a boat included.

It's a genuinely different way to experience the river compared with the standard boat cruise — you're fishing within sight of hippos, crocodiles, and often shoebill storks working the same stretch of water.

Tips

• Best fished from a dedicated fishing boat rather than the standard tourist cruise boat
• A fishing permit, separate from general park fees, is required — confirm with your lodge in advance
• Ask your lodge whether catch-and-release is standard or whether they'll prepare your catch for dinner
