The stretch of the Victoria Nile below Murchison Falls holds one of the densest hippo concentrations anywhere in Africa. Pods are visible almost continuously along the boat cruise route, often dozens of individuals at once, mostly submerged with only eyes, ears, and nostrils breaking the surface during the heat of the day. They become more active — and more visible — in the cooler hours around dawn and dusk, when they graze on land near the riverbank.
Despite their slow appearance in water, hippos are among Africa's most dangerous animals to encounter on land, and guides keep a respectful distance at all times, including during the boat cruise.
Large Nile crocodiles bask openly on the sandbanks along the same stretch of river, easily spotted from the boat cruise, with some individuals well over 4–5 metres in length. They're most visible sunning themselves in open, exposed spots during mid-morning and early afternoon, when they need to regulate body temperature after cooler nights.
The Nile boat cruise is by far the best activity for both species — it moves slowly along the exact stretch of river where both are most concentrated, at a distance close enough for genuinely good photography.
