Where the boat cruise gets you close to the base of the falls, the hike to the top puts you at the point where the entire Victoria Nile is compressed through a gorge just 7 metres wide before dropping 43 metres. You feel it before you see it — the ground trembles slightly underfoot, and the roar is audible from the trail well before the viewpoint itself.
There are two main vantage points: one looking directly down into the gorge where the river is at its narrowest, and a second offering a wider view of the falls and the plunge pool below, often with a rainbow in the mist on sunny days.
Most itineraries reach the top of the falls by vehicle via the top gate road. An alternative, more adventurous option combines the boat cruise with a hike up from the base — check with your operator whether this route is running, as it depends on water levels and park conditions.
