What to expect

Ziwa is the only place in Uganda to see rhinos in the wild — both black and white rhino were locally extinct until a reintroduction program re-established a breeding population here. Because it sits directly on the main road between Kampala and Murchison Falls, it's almost universally visited as a stop en route rather than a separate trip.

Tracking is done on foot. You drive into the sanctuary, then walk in with a ranger who uses radio-tracking to locate a group before approaching on foot. Visitors typically get surprisingly close — often within 10–20 metres — and it's common to see multiple rhinos, sometimes several distinct groups, in a single visit.

Tips

• Wear neutral colours and closed shoes for the walk-in
• Visit mid-morning; rhinos are often resting in shade by midday in the dry season
• This stop breaks up the 5–6 hour drive from Kampala well — build it into your first day rather than adding a separate trip
