The Royal Mile takes its name from Omukama (King) Kabalega of Bunyoro-Kitara, who is said to have used this stretch of forest as a recreational retreat with his queen in the 19th century. The trail's flat, wide terrain — originally cleared for royal use — is exactly what makes it so effective for birding today: easy walking with clear sightlines into the surrounding canopy, unusual for tropical forest trails.
The Royal Mile is consistently ranked among Uganda's very best birding sites, sometimes compared internationally to celebrated birding roads elsewhere in the tropics. Species counts here run into the several hundred, including the "Budongo specials" — chocolate-backed kingfisher, Ituri batis, Nahan's francolin, and the East-Africa-endemic Puvel's illadopsis among them.
The Royal Mile sits in the Busingiro sector, west of Kaniyo Pabidi and slightly further from Murchison Falls' main gates — worth building specific time into your itinerary for this as a dedicated stop rather than assuming it's a quick add-on to chimp trekking at Kaniyo Pabidi, which is a separate site. A specialist birding guide, rather than a general safari guide, makes a real difference here.
