Kidepo sits in Uganda's far northeast, isolated enough that it receives a fraction of the visitors Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth do — and that isolation is exactly the appeal. Described by CNN as one of Africa's best parks, Kidepo's Narus Valley offers a genuinely different landscape from Murchison's riverine savanna: golden grassland framed by the jagged Morungole Mountains, with the seasonal Kidepo and Narus rivers cutting through.
Kidepo holds species found nowhere else in Uganda's park system — cheetah, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, and caracal among them — alongside strong populations of elephant (600+), buffalo (10,000+), and over 50 Rothschild's giraffe. The Kanagorok hot springs, near the Sudan border, add a genuine off-the-beaten-path stop within the park itself.
By road, the drive from Murchison Falls takes around 7 hours on sealed road, often broken up with a stop near Sipi Falls. By air, light aircraft fly from Entebbe, sometimes routing directly over Murchison Falls itself en route — a genuinely spectacular way to see both parks from above. Flights are limited and can be pricier for couples or small groups, since some operators require a minimum passenger count.
