Transfers from Airports to Safari Lodges

Seamless transfers are crucial for a stress-free start and end to your safari. In Tanzania, transfers from major airports to safari lodges are almost always pre-arranged and handled by your tour operator or the lodge itself.

Key Airports for Safari Travelers:

  • Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO): The primary gateway for the Northern Circuit safaris (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara).
  • Arusha Airport (ARK): A smaller domestic airport serving flights to/from JRO and directly to various park airstrips. Transfers from JRO to Arusha town, or from Arusha Airport to nearby lodges, are common.
  • Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR): Located in Dar es Salaam, serving as the gateway for Southern Tanzania safaris (Nyerere, Ruaha) and Zanzibar.
  • Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ): For beach extensions on Zanzibar.

Typical Transfer Methods:

  • By Safari Vehicle: If your safari begins immediately upon arrival, your safari guide will meet you at the airport in your dedicated safari vehicle. This is common for JRO arrivals heading to Arusha or starting a circuit.
  • Lodge Shuttle/Private Car: Many lodges in Arusha or near the airports offer pre-arranged shuttle services or private car transfers.
  • Domestic Flights: For safaris in Southern or Western Tanzania, or for flying between Northern Circuit parks, you will take light aircraft flights from airports like Arusha (ARK) or Dar es Salaam (DAR) to small airstrips within or near the parks. Your lodge or camp will then arrange a safari vehicle transfer from the airstrip to the accommodation.

Important Tips:

  • Pre-Booking is Essential: Never rely on finding a taxi or transfer upon arrival, especially at smaller airports or remote airstrips. All transfers should be pre-booked as part of your safari package.
  • Clear Communication: Ensure your tour operator or lodge has your exact flight details (arrival time, flight number) and that you know who will be meeting you and where.
  • Look for Your Name: Upon exiting customs and baggage claim, look for a sign with your name or the name of your tour operator/lodge.
  • Luggage Restrictions: Be mindful of luggage weight and size restrictions for domestic light aircraft flights (often 15-20kg in soft bags).

Traveling from Uganda: You would typically fly from Entebbe (EBB) to Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Dar es Salaam (DAR) for your entry into Tanzania, and your transfers would then be arranged from there.
