Gorilla trekking is a privilege that comes with great responsibility. To protect endangered mountain gorillas and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors, strict rules and guidelines are in place. Understanding and following them is essential.

Why the Rules Matter

  • Conservation: Gorillas are endangered and vulnerable to human diseases and environmental disruption.
  • Safety: Both visitors and gorillas must be protected during encounters.
  • Sustainability: Responsible trekking ensures future generations can enjoy the same experience.

General Trekking Rules

  • Minimum Age: Participants must be at least 15 years old.
  • Health Requirement: Do not trek if you’re sick, especially with flu, cough, or diarrhea.
  • Permit Requirement: A valid gorilla trekking permit is mandatory and must be presented before the trek.

Guidelines During the Trek

1. Group Behavior

  • Stay in your assigned group, usually up to 8 trekkers per gorilla family.
  • Follow your ranger and do not wander off.
  • Keep noise to a minimum to avoid startling the gorillas or wildlife.

2. Distance

  • Maintain a distance of at least 7 meters (21 feet) from the gorillas at all times.
  • If a gorilla approaches you, remain still and avoid direct eye contact.

3. Hygiene & Health

  • Use hand sanitizer before the trek.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
  • Avoid spitting in the park or littering any waste.

Interaction with Gorillas

  • Do not attempt to touch or feed the gorillas.
  • Stay calm and composed, even if they come close.
  • Never run—if a gorilla charges or slaps the ground, follow the ranger’s instructions.

Photography Rules

  • Flash photography is strictly prohibited.
  • Move slowly when raising or adjusting your camera.
  • Respect the animals’ space while taking pictures.

Environmental Conduct

  • Stick to designated trails to avoid disturbing vegetation.
  • Do not collect plants or disrupt the habitat in any way.
  • Carry out everything you bring into the park, including wrappers and bottles.

Time with the Gorillas

  • You are allowed a maximum of one hour with the gorilla family.
  • The hour starts once the group reaches the gorillas, not when the trek begins.

After the Encounter

  • Leave the area quietly and respectfully.
  • Share your experience in a way that promotes conservation and ethical tourism.

Following these guidelines shows respect for the gorillas, their habitat, and the communities working hard to protect them.
