This is a genuinely different kind of stay from every other property on this list — the Budongo Conservation Field Station (BCFS) is a working research institution, not a tourism lodge, founded in 1990 to study the Sonso chimpanzee community (now around 85 individuals, all named and individually recognised by field staff). Accommodation is basic by design, intended primarily for researchers, students, and serious birders rather than standard safari travellers.
Sonso holds one of the longest continuously studied wild chimpanzee communities in Africa, alongside a second habituated community (Waibira). Serious birders and anyone with a genuine research or conservation interest — rather than a standard one-hour trek — should consider this over the standard Kaniyo Pabidi trekking experience.
Simple rooms across several buildings, a communal grass-thatched banda used as a social hub, indoor dining facilities, and a herbarium — genuinely a research camp rather than a resort.
