Budongo Eco Lodge is the essential base for chimpanzee trekking at Kaniyo Pabidi — it's the only accommodation in this part of the park, and the visitor centre where treks are briefed and permits purchased is located here. The lodge manages the Kaniyo Pabidi chimpanzee community's habituation programme (taken over from the Jane Goodall Institute in 2009), so staying here puts you at the literal starting point of the trail rather than requiring a transfer to begin.
Nights are genuinely immersive — screaming tree hyraxes, chimpanzee calls, and monkey activity are audible from the cabins after dark. The forest itself is one of Uganda's best for a specific bird species, the Puvel's Illadopsis, found nowhere else in East Africa and occasionally seen on the lodge grounds itself.
About 30km from Masindi, a workable stop either as a dedicated chimp-trekking base or as a stopover between Kampala and Murchison Falls proper.
