Murchison Falls holds Uganda's largest elephant population, and sightings are among the most reliable of any species in the park — herds and lone bulls are seen on the large majority of game drives, often near water sources or moving between feeding areas on the north bank savanna. Elephants are also commonly seen from the water during the Nile boat cruise, drinking or bathing along the riverbank, which makes this one of the few species you can count on seeing from two completely different vantage points in the same trip.
Herds are matriarchal, typically led by an older female, with young calves kept close to the centre of the group for protection. Bulls are often seen alone or in small bachelor groups, particularly older individuals. Elephants here are generally habituated to vehicles at a respectful distance, though guides maintain space, especially around calves.
